On February 29, 2004 the New York Daily News ran an Associated Press article that reported, "The chief rabbi of Russia joined dozens of Orthodox rabbis and civil officials recently to inaugurate an academy in the Austrian capital that will train a new generation to lead the revival of Jewish life in the former Soviet bloc. Jewish communities there were devastated by World War II and decades of Communist rule. The academy replaces one that was burned down on Nov. 9, 1938, in the night of violence against Jews known as Kristallnacht - the Night of Broken Glass...Since the fall of communism, rabbis trained in Israel or the U.S. have been sent to former Soviet bloc countries to guide and instruct Jewish communities."
