On July 22, 2003 the Register-Pajaronian reported that "the Watsonville Buddhist Temple was the site of an Asian extravaganza Sunday during the annual Obon Festival. Japanese-Americans filled the Bridge Street complex to enjoy traditional foods, musical performances and games from their native Far East island nation... While this year's festival was livelier than ever, the annual event is used to honor deceased members of the temple who have passed away since last year's Obon... Shannon Kato, president of the local chapter of the Young Buddhists of America, said she likes the atmosphere of each year's event... 'It's a time when my family can get together and enjoy the day,' Kato said."
