On August 4, 2003 Newsday reported that "three Indian emigrants were assaulted outside their Woodside [NY] home Sunday night by three white men who called them a "bin Laden family" and told them to go back to their own country, police said yesterday... All of their injuries were minor, and the three men fled before police arrived... A husband, 41, wife, 32, grown cousin and two children, aged 8 and 10, were returning home around 9 p.m. Sunday from a long day spent looking for a house in Long Island City when the men, driving a white livery cab, began yelling slurs at them, the family said... When the children were safely inside, the cousin, Lakhvir Singh Gill, 32, tried to reason with them... 'My friend, we are not from an Arabic country. We are from India. We're not the Taliban, we are Sikh,' said Gill, whose Ford Explorer bears a bumper sticker that says 'Proud to be an American and a Sikh...' But that only further incensed the men, who then spat at the family and got out of their car to attack them, the wife and cousin said."
