On April 8, 2002, The Register Guard reported that on March 29, Gurdial Singh Sarkaria's convenience store in Medford, OR, was vandalized. "After the store's
windows were smashed... Sarkaria... removed the red turban of
his Sikh religion. The price of wearing it, he says, is too high... [He] now
wears his long hair under a smaller head wrap concealed beneath a black baseball cap.
He said he doesn't feel too bad about giving up the turban because he's the only Sikh the
family has seen in the Rogue Valley" in Oregon.
