On February 21, 2004 The Tri-Valley Herald published a profile on the Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church in Union City. Here, "congregants gather every Sunday to practice a unique variety of Buddhism known as Jodo Shinshu Shu. The denomination was named after Shinran Shonin, a 12th-century Buddha from Kyoto, Japan. While most of the congregation's 200 families are of Japanese descent, other Asians as well as other nationalities worship here, too, said Robert Noguchi, a church member and representative of the Buddhist Churches of America."
