On July 13, 2004 The Muslim News reported, "Greece's minority Muslim community has called on Muslims around the world to boycott the Athens Olympics because of the way they are treated, according to a television report to be aired on Tuesday night. At the centre of Muslim concerns is the absence of a single legal mosque, or an Islamic cemetery in the Games host city, according to ABC TV's Foreign Correspondent program. But the report says approval to build one in the outer Athens suburb of Peania has finally been granted, and the money is coming from Saudi Arabia. However, local residents and the Greek Orthodox Church have begun legal action to try to stop it even erecting a huge cross on the site against what they consider to be a new Muslim invasion."
