GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A house on the city's eastside will become a Sikh temple after a board of zoning appeals vote Monday. The request to convert the house at 1050 S. Graham Road came from members of the Sikh community who wanted a place to worship near where they live. The action passed 3-0, with one board member absent.

About 100 Sikh families live in the Homecoming at University Park development on Main Street, and the nearest temple is miles away on Indianapolis' Southeastside. The Graham Road house sits on a four-acre site and is about a five-minute walk from the subdivision.

"Over the last few years, a sizable Sikh community has moved into Greenwood," Chanchal Singh told the board. "We want a place of worship close to home."
