On April 19, 2004 Fresno Bee reported, "Vaisakhi commemorates the Sikh New Year, which is based on the Khalsa nation founded by Guru Gobind Singh more than 300 years ago. Vaisakhi also marks harvest season in Punjab, homeland to Sikhs in South Asia. In Selma, nearly 2,000 Sikhs celebrated with a service at the Sikh Temple of the Pacific Coast, the parade (nagar kirtan) and a meal (langar). Hundreds walked among the floats in traditional clothing to show their unity and displayed signs to demonstrate their U.S. allegiance."
