On August 6, 2004 Charlotte Observer reported, "Roman Catholics took sides Thursday, the day after three Southeastern bishops barred politicians who support abortion rights from receiving Holy Communion... Bishop Peter Jugis of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte joined Bishop Robert Baker of Charleston and Archbishop John Donoghue of Atlanta in denying communion to Catholic candidates and officeholders who support abortion. It's unclear how many politicians in the Charlotte and Charleston dioceses and Atlanta archdiocese support abortion rights and, thus, are barred from communion unless they go to confession. Also not yet made clear at this point is exactly how the policy will be implemented. In the 46-county Charlotte diocese, priests will be expected to notify Jugis of candidates and officeholders who support abortion rights and seek communion. Jugis will then get in touch with that person and seek to reconcile him or her to church teaching."
