Fatima and Elnaz Firoz, a mother and daughter who are healers by their professions, were among those who sought to heal an ailing world at a special interfaith service on Sunday.

"The world has been broken into pieces. Those pieces have to be brought together," said Fatima Firoz, a Muslim who works as a psychologist.

Elnaz Firoz, Fatima's 26-year-old daughter and a third-year Columbia University medical student, had an idea of how to mend the world's broken pieces.

"It's all about awareness," she said. "Events like this are the perfect breeding ground for awareness."

Nearly 80 people gathered to pray for peace at Noor va Danesh, an Iranian Islamic center that has made its home since 1998 in an 80-year-old building that was once a Protestant church.
