History: The Nichiren Buddhist Sangha of Greater New England practices the Nichiren Shu tradition, founded by Nichiren Shonin (1222-1282). Central to the Nichiren Shu practice is the chanting of the Odaimoku (Sacred Title): "Namu Myoho Renge Kyo," or "Adoration to the Scripture of the Lotus of the Perfect Truth." The Nichiren Buddhist Sangha of Greater New England is in its earliest stages. Reverend Faulconer moved to Jamaica Plain in January 2007 by the order of his master to organize a Nichiren Shu community in the Boston area. In August of 2008, the temple moved to Haverhill. With his current sangha, Reverend Faulconer leads regular chanting, drumming, the copying of scriptures, and sitting meditation sessions.
Leadership: Reverend Faulconer is somewhat of a community-building expert, having established and nourished congregations in Oregon, Texas, and Florida. During his time in Oregon, Reverend Faulconer presided over 32 families. His community participated in many outreach activities, retreats, hiking trips, and even a pilgrimage to Japan. Driven by this proactive spirit, Reverend Faulconer recently enjoyed participating in the “Wake Up the Earth” festival in Jamaica Plain, and anticipates celebrating “Change Your Mind Day” led by Tricycle Magazine. In the near future, he hopes to have a presence at the Boston Pride Festival and local community fairs.
