Winter Solstice Celebrated In Iceland Today

Today is the shortest day of the year when the sun is in the far south. Winter solstice is at 5:47 pm, after which the sun begins to move northwards and the days grow longer again. Tomorrow the day will be nine seconds longer than today.

The shortest day of the year is only four hours and nine minutes long. From tomorrow onwards, it will grow longer until peaking at 21 hours at the summer solstice in June, Morgunbladidreports.

Today, sunrise is at 11:22 in Reykjavík and sunset at 3:30 pm. InÍsafjördur, in the northern West Fjords, the sun will rise at 12:09 pm and set at 2:53 pm.

Siglufjördur, in north Iceland, sees the sun rise at 11:54 am and set at 3:34 pm and in Djúpivogur, in the south, sunrise is at 11:01 am and sunset at 2:50 pm.

Ásatrúarfélagid, which honors the old Norse religion, will celebrate winter solstice with ceremonies around Iceland today.
