On January 27, 2006 The Charlotte Observer reported, "There's a fair number of [witches] in Gaston and Lincoln counties, Kym Miller said this week... in her Witches' Brew Cafe on the courthouse square in Lincolnton. She should know. She's a witch herself. (A cafe sign reads: 'Yes, I'm a witch. Deal with it.') Miller, 36, is an ordained high priestess in the Wiccan religion. Two years ago, she founded a Wiccan group called the SilverMoon Fellowship... Miller thought Witches' Brew might get the boot when she and her best friend, Leigh Hewitt, 43, opened the cafe six months ago. It's not overtly Wiccan: no signs or literature or employees broadcasting the connection. But the witch dolls and witch decor and Harry Potter books offended a local preacher, who threatened to boycott the new business, Miller said. Letters supporting the cafe's right to be there ran in the local newspaper. The Witches' Brew owners met with other business owners. Miller said cooler heads prevailed and the controversy blew over. The cafe sells coffee, espresso, tea, fruit smoothies and baked goods. And it also promotes local art, bands and poetry."
