On July 17, 2006 The Virginian-Pilot reported, "To defy death is impossible - everyone knows that, said Amarjit Singh. But the mass murder of people traveling in Bombay, India, last week was incomprehensible, Singh said. Eight bombs exploded in several train stations, killing about 200 people and wounding at least 700, according to news reports. Locally, more than 150 people gathered at a Kempsville community center Sunday for a special meeting with the Guru Nanak Foundation of Tidewater, a group of Asian Indians of the Sikh religion. They prayed for the dead and for their families. Jagdish Singh, a Chesapeake resident and president of Asian Indians of Hampton Roads, organized the gathering. Amarjit Singh is her husband, and one of several people who spoke. Participants left their shoes at the front door and covered their heads with white handkerchiefs or bright, flowing scarves. Sitting cross -legged on the floor at the Kempsville Lakes Community Association on Weller Boulevard, they chanted and sang in Punjabi and asked God to grant the world peace. None of the mourners lost family members in the terrorist blasts, event organizers said. They came to offer their condolences to the people around the world who did."
