On August 16, 2005 the Press Trust of India reported, Sikhs in the United States have 'appreciated' Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's apology over the 1984 riots while demanding action against the guilty. 'We appreciate that the Prime Minister of India has apologised to the Sikh community as well as to the whole nation' for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Rajwant Singh, Chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education (SCORE) said in a statement here. 'Although this apology came 21 years late, yet Prime Minister's expression seemed very sincere,' he said. Singh said 'this gesture of apology is a step in the right direction. But the wounds will only be healed when this is backed by concrete actions against the perpetrators and the instigators of these heinous crimes. They need to receive the appropriate punishment under the law.' Amrit Kaur, secretary of Washington-based Guru Gobind Singh Foundation, said that 'Sikhs deserve to get justice as is enshrined in the Constitution of India.'"
