U.S. Responds to Earthquake in India

On January 29, 2001, The Houston Chronicle reported on the efforts of Houston-area Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians "to raise funds for victims of Friday's earthquake in the west Indian state of Gujarat...So far, the India Development & Relief Fund has reached $250,000." Organizations involved in the relief effort include the Pakistan Association of Greater Houston, the Northwest Community Baptist Church, and Gujarati Samaj, an Indian-American cultural group. "India's consul general in Houston said the response to the earthquake victim's needs has been gratifying - and more help is needed." Both the American and the International Red Cross have also donated to India's relief operations.
