On October 19, 2003 Reuters reported that presidential candidates were condemning President Bush for his failure to respond U.S. General Boykin's reference to the war on terror as a "spiritual war." Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean "called on Bush on Sunday to ''show some leadership' and ask Boykin to resign. 'Not only did General Boykin's comments contradict everything America stands for; they could hamstring our ability to rally other nations in the fight against terrorism,' the former Vermont governor said in a statement. Democratic candidates Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts earlier chastised the administration for failing to criticize Boykin."
