On August 6, 2003 Newsday reported that "at least two dozen people representing various social justice, immigrant rights and civil liberties groups met in an emergency session in Jackson Heights last night to plan a united response to Sunday night's bias attack against a Sikh family... The groups plan to hold a peace vigil in the next two weeks and seek passage of stronger hate-crime legislation to discourage similar attacks... The groups say they plan to pressure city lawmakers to take stronger positions on adjusting the Patriot Act - the anti-terrorism law passed by Congress which the groups believe creates a climate that encourages bias attacks... Among those attending the meeting was State Sen. John Sabini (D-Jackson Heights), who vowed to work with community leaders in writing stronger bias laws."
