On January 8, 2006 Newsday reported, "Jaswinder Singh, 15, and his brother Kabal, 17, stared down at the face of their father Saturday as he lay in his coffin, a red turban on his head, rose petals on his chest. Tears streaked the boys' cheeks. It was the first time they had seen their father in 10 years. The boys and their mother, Lakhwinder Kaur, 39, had flown in from India Thursday after Gurbaj Singh, 40, was killed in his cab in a fiery hit-and-run accident by an allegedly drunken driver on Dec. 26... At least 200 fellow cab drivers, Sikh community members, relatives and friends mourned Singh at a Richmond Hill funeral home Saturday... Singh's death has prompted calls for better working conditions for drivers... Freddy Ramlochan, 27, of Bedford-Stuyvesant, was arrested two days after the accident and charged with criminally negligent homicide. He allegedly ran away from the scene following the crash."
