On July 7, 2003 the Contra Costa Times reported that "Sikh taxi drivers are so upset over two shootings in four days, one of them fatal, that they no longer want to work at night... On Sunday a group of drivers and Harpreet S. Sandhu, president of the Gurdwara Sahib Sikh temple in El Sobrante, met with Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia to bring attention to their plight and complain about police, who they say are lackadaisical about crime against taxi drivers. District Attorney Bob Kochly participated in part of the meeting by telephone... Similar grievances were aired Saturday at a meeting of drivers at the Sikh Temple, Sandhu said... The two latest attacks on Sikh drivers have reinforced the views of many that they are targeted not just for the cash they carry, but also because of their highly visible ethnicity. Most observant Sikh men wear turbans and have long beards, and many drivers say they have suffered frequent ethnically based verbal abuse besides physical attacks."
