The highly diverse population of Union City, California experienced a unique feeling on Saturday, June 27, 2009. Residents of different faiths, beliefs and creeds sat together all day long to learn about their neighbors’ religious practices and invocations. Union City involved its residents to celebrate Golden anniversary of the establishment of the City Beautiful. Kennedy Park remained cheerful during Interfaith Festival from 10 am to 6 pm. Songs, dances, prayers and speeches kept the residents engaged throughout the day. Churches, Gurdwaras, Temples, Mosques all participated in the all day long events. Residents’ curiosity was obvious from their enthusiasm to know different paths to spirituality in their neighborhood.
Sikhs’ presence in Kennedy Park was overwhelming and quite prominent. Sikh prayer (Ardas) and musical rendering (Kirtan) was performed in Punjabi. Speeches were made to explain Sikh symbolism and marks of invocations. Sikh Youth felt proud to exhibit their (martial art) Gatka skills. Their coach Jaspreet Singh Lavla directed the show. The event attracted attentions of the entire audience. Kirtan was performed by Professor Dalbir Singh. Bibi Sarbjit Kaur Cheema conducted the events in an appreciable manner. Fremont Gurdwara served Langar to members of all denominations.
