On August 30, 2004 Express-News reported, "given the ferocity of the ongoing battle over the Bible at the Harris County Courthouse, it is perhaps not surprising that the woman seeking to remove it should receive a death threat amid the hate mail... Two weeks ago, following a short trial, U.S. District Judge Sim Lake — a conservative Reagan appointee — ruled in her favor. He ordered the county to remove the Bible by midnight Aug. 24 and to pay Staley's legal fees of about $40,000. The county appealed and Lake's orders were temporarily stayed by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. The legal timeout, however, has done nothing to cool things down in Houston."
