On June 18, 2006 Asian News International reported, "Nepal's tourism industry, hit hard by the recent political turmoil, is slowly reviving as domestic and foreign tourists are thronging to Lumbini - the birth place of Lord Buddha... Tourist arrivals at Lumbini, which has been a major cultural and pilgrimage centre for Buddhists, dropped significantly following bouts of Maoist violence and political instability in the Himalayan kingdom. Nepalese authorities, who are trying to market Lumbini as a tourist destination, are optimistic that the prevailing ceasefire will help Nepal's tourism industry."
