Nearly 100 people were in attendance at the Katog Choling Tibetan Cultural Center Sunday afternoon to celebrate Losar, the Tibetan new year.

Aside from celebrating the new year, those in attendance also commemorated the grand opening of the cultural center's new home, located at 901 East Saint Mary Blvd. The ceremony, which started at 1 p.m., was complete with authentic Tibetan foods, tara and tashi delek dances, and the creation of prayer flags.

Also on hand for the grand opening was the Katog Choling spiritual leader Khentrul Lodro Thaye Rinpoche, a native of eastern Tibet and the abbot of the Mardo Tashi Choling Monastery in Tibet, which houses 300 monks and 100 children.

"When we start a new year, we want to start it in the best possible way," Rinpoche said through his interpreter, Paloma Landry. "We want to start the new year as positive as possible."
