Kuala Lumpur _ Chulalongkorn University's Halal Science Centre (HASCI), the world's first laboratory for halal food research, yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on technical cooperation with Malaysia's giant Halal Industry Development Corp. The signing was welcomed by Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who said it would lead to greater knowledge of halal foods and improvement of much-needed laboratory skills in the industry.

He was speaking at the 2nd World Halal Forum being held in Kuala Lumpur.

Mr Abdullah said the input from HASCI would lead to a harmonising of the industry. Halal food was still plagued with problems caused by the lack of a common standard, which led to consumer distrust and confusion over products.
