On May 15, 2006 the Sikh News Network reported, "A student and young professional organization is attempting to collect quantitative data on Sikh women in the United States. The results of this survey would show for the first time the degree of impact of women’s issues affecting the U.S. Sikh community. Jakara is an organization of college students and young professionals from the San Francisco Bay area that grown since its inception over six years ago. Jakara describes itself as having 'evolved into an annual Sikh Conference where students, putting aside all divisions that fracture the community come together to share their experiences in a comfortable democratic atmosphere.' The conference is a grassroots effort run exclusively by students addressing both social and religiously. Their goal is to understand their own community. Every year the group takes on a topic that is then studied, presented and discussed at the conference. Guests speakers, considered to be authorities on the topic, are invited to enrich their knowledge. Over 250 college students from around the country attend the conference."
