So for years the university's Muslim students prayed in random rooms around campus instead of using the historic worship space.
"We don't believe Jesus died on the cross, and there's a lot of crosses in the building," said Ahlia Kattan, adding that the church's wooden pews also make it difficult to bow down during prayers.
But Kattan and other students now have a new place for devotion. This month, Stanford dedicated an interfaith space - the entire third floor of the Old Union - to accommodate the university's growing religious diversity, which runs the gamut from agnostics to Zoroastrians.
