An undergraduate of Islamic Studies at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, has been arrested by men of the State Security Service, SSS, for allegedly spreading torn and desecrated copies of the Holy Qur'an around the university campus.

The Public Relations Officer of the University, Alhaji Ahmed said the student's motive may be to incite religious violence, but the SSS decline comments.

Weekly Trust reports that the University, now opened for students to complete exams, was closed down some weeks ago midway into second semester exams, following rampaging protests by students over alleged "blasphemy" on Islam. The protest followed allegation that a student had used pages of Qur'an to clean himself up after excretion.
