On June 2, 2006 the Chicago Tribune reported, "For decades, [Lakeview Funeral Home]... has catered to the Japanese-American community in Chicago. 'It's very comfortable,' [Calvin] Mashio said, adding that some funeral homes are uncomfortable offering a Buddhist service. He doesn't have to explain customs to the staff because they 'know how things work. You don't have to worry that they're not going to have incense or an easel to show the deceased.' That peace of mind helps families, he said. Lakeview is one of at least a handful of funeral homes in the Chicago area that have carved out a niche by accommodating various religious faiths. As a result, the businesses often receive recommendations via word of mouth and become staples in those communities. These parlors have familiarized themselves with the customs and rituals of such religions as Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. Families appreciate the funeral homes' allowing them to observe such traditions as washing bodies onsite."
