On June 28, 2003 The Hartford Courant reported that "several dozen Sikhs [marched]through downtown Hartford [CT] to the state Capitol [on Saturday]. They proclaimed their loyalty to the United States... 'Sikhs love USA!' the flag-waving marchers chanted as they made their way around Bushnell Park and up the hill toward the Capitol. 'Sikhs celebrate the Fourth of July!' Nearly two years after the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, Sikhs remain on the defensive. Too often, they say, Sikhs are suspect to an ignorant police and public, if only for their beards, skin color and turbans."
