In what was once Sonrise Community Church, the growing number of Sikhs living in the Birmingham area have started Alabama's first Sikh temple.

Sikhism, one of the world's major religions, originated in the 16th century but until recently there were too few followers in the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa areas to purchase a building.

For nearly 25 years, Sikhs living here met in each other's homes to worship and meditate before opening the Sikh Temple of Alabama in September on Morgan Road between Bessemer and Helena.

The number of Sikhs in central Alabama has nearly doubled over the past 25 years, and for several years they have searched for a building to buy, said Nirmal Gaill Singh, pr
