Hundreds of devotees gathered at the Sikh Temple last week to celebrate the 540th Prakash Utsav or birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Devji, the founder of Sikhism.

Raj Bedi, Auckland Sikh centre secretary, says the devotees included not only Sikhs but Hindus and Indians from other states of India.

"Some Kiwis also attended the evening, sending out the message how the Indians especially the Sikhs have been accepted and merged in the mainstream here,'' he says.

The celebration provided a glimpse into the Sikh culture and beliefs.
