Last month, Reading Employment Tribunal heard the case of Grewal v Metropolitan Police Service, a claim brought by a Sikh female police officer who complained that a trainer at the Metropolitan Police’s training school singled her out for abuse and criticism on the grounds of her race and religion.

Amandeep Kaur Grewal told the Tribunal how WPC Lucinda Rigby had picked on her and treated her differently because of her race and religion. When she complained, Rigby responded by telling her that other students were laughing at her. The animosity led to other students treating Grewal in a “less than friendly fashion”, further exacerbating Grewal’s humiliation. The situation became so entrenched that another trainer had to hold a diversity class.
