On January 28, 2004 The Associated Press reported, "Followers of the Sikh faith in mid-Michigan now have a place to gather after years of meeting in area homes and traveling to the Detroit area for services. The Guru Nanak Sikh Center opened earlier this month. 'It feels good, like a big extended family,' Ladi Singh Multani, a business owner and one of five founders of the temple, told the Lansing State Journal. 'This country is our home but still when you have a place to worship, you feel more at home...' Multani said there are about 200 Sikhs in the Lansing area, with about half belonging to the new temple. The 3,000-square-foot center, formerly the New Mount Calvary Baptist Church, opened Jan. 4. It took about $300,000 to remodel the church."
