A security sheriff was just doing his job when he told a Sikh man on Monday he could not take his ceremonial dagger with him into a Calgary court building, says the spokesman for Alberta's solicitor-general.

"Anything that would not be allowed on an airplane can't be brought into court," said Andy Weiler of the Alberta Solicitor-General and Public Security ministry.

"Generally, anything that can be turned into a weapon is not permitted," Weiler said. "It's similar to policy in other jurisdictions in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and around the greater Toronto area."
