Faith, community and the start of a new harvest season were heralded Sunday at the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Fairfield.

Hundreds gathered for Vaisakhi, a festival that celebrates the birth of another harvest season and is held on a holy day that commemorates the first Sikh baptisms.

That baptism occurred in 1699 and was presided over by Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th and final human prophet. The Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh Holy Book, was named the living or eternal guru in 1708.

On Sunday, gaily dressed revelers traversed the lively temple grounds, which was abloom with activity.

Families crowded around tented booths offering everything from religious texts to jewelry and other goods.

The heady aromas of naan, a type of flatbread, curries and other traditional ethnic dishes lured attendees to long tables lining the main thoroughfare. All edibles were free of charge, compliments of various local restaurants that support the Sikhs and the local community at large.
