Sikh Family is Attacked in Hate Crime in Queens, NY

On August 15, 2003 India Abroad reported that "Surinder Singh... along with his wife and two kids and brother Lakhvir Singh Gill," were attacked in what as been classified by the New York police as a hate crime. The incident occurred near their house in the Woodside neighborhood in Queens, New York. Three unidentified men yelled at Singh, "'bin Ladin, hey bin Laden, go back to your country'... Singh told them he had nothing to do with the Taliban... 'They punched my head, my back, and held me in a choke hold'... Gill has a swollen lip, a cut elbow and bruises along his arm and leg... Singh's wife has taken to spending most of her time at home. She is scared to venture out. 'They hit her also on the head and the back, she's still hurting,' Singh said."
