The Malaysian Gurdwaras Council is appealing to the Government to issue proper directives to the Islamic religious authorities to prevent any controversy involving a person’s final rites.
The council was referring to the case of Mohan Singh, who died of a heart attack on May 25 but his remains were not released by the Sungai Buloh Hospital to his family as he was believed to have converted to Islam in 1992.
On Monday, the High Court granted the family leave to apply for a judicial review and an interim order preventing the hospital to release the body to any other party without a court order pending the disposal of the case.
Malaysian Gurdwaras Council president Jagir Singh said he was perturbed that Mohan’s family could not take his body to perform the last rites as required by Sikhism.
