On May 8, 2003 the Sikh Council On Religion & Education issued a press release expressing "support for progress in the development of the hate crimes bill officially known in the Senate as the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act (LLEEA). As law, LLEEA (s.966) will enable federal law enforcement agencies to assist local agencies in the investigation and prosecution of cases in which violence occurs because of the victim’s race, religion, sexual orientation, gender or disability... LLEEA is supported by a coalition of over 175 civil rights, religious and law enforcement groups across the nation including the Anti-Defamation League, the Center for Women Policy Studies, the Arab American Institute, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the NAACP."
