On May 8, 2005 The Panthic Weekly reported, "the National Day of Prayer, an event eastablished in 1952 by an Act of the United States Congress, is held every year at the White House. Every US president in the last fifty years has hosted the event with religious leaders. This year's prayer day was held on May 5. Mr Manjit Singh, Vice Chair of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) participated, along with religious leaders of many different faiths from across the country. Founded in 1996 as the Sikh Mediawatch and Resource Task Force (SMART), SALDEF is an American Sikh non-profit civil rights and educational organization. 'We empower Sikh Americans through legal assistance, educational outreach, legislative advocacy and media relations,' says Kavneet Singh in a press release."
