Hindu religious leaders have called for disciplinary action to be taken against a Durban Girls' High teacher who allegedly told her pupils Hindus would go to hell.

According to a Sunday Tribune report, the teacher reportedly said this during a class discussion, which apparently led to a non-Hindu pupil telling her Hindu classmates that they would be reincarnated as cows.

President of the South African Hindu Dharma Sabha, Ram Maharaj, last week wrote to the provincial Minister of Education, Ina Cronje, the national Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, and the Human Rights Commission about the matter.

Maharaj, who is in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature's education portfolio committee, requested an investigation and measures to be taken to prevent unfair treatment of pupils based on their cultural and religious beliefs.
