Harris County Sheriff-elect Adrian Garcia visited a Sikh temple on Sunday, promising expanded diversity training and to investigate a complaint that deputies harassed a Sikh family during a burglary investigation.

Garcia removed his shoes and put on a head covering to enter the temple, telling several hundred people that it was unfortunate that they were becoming acquainted under these circumstances, the Houston Chronicle reported in its online editions.

"When these types of circumstances occur, we all lose. The image of what should be American authority suffers," he said.
