On April 25, 2005 The Scotsman reported, "The Scottish National Party backed calls for state-funded Muslim schools yesterday, in a move aimed at attracting disillusioned Labour voters. Alex Salmond, the Nationalist’s leader, said that the choice granted to Catholic parents should be given to Muslims and people from other religions. Faith schools are becoming more of an election topic, with both the SNP and the Scottish Conservatives now backing Muslim schools which already exist in the English state sector."
