The Duke of Edinburgh's visit to a Hindu temple was cancelled because the place of worship is being investigated by the Charity Commission, Buckingham Palace said.

The Duke was scheduled to meet faith leaders at the Shree Hindu Temple in Leicester as part of a day of engagements in the city with the Queen.

Weeks of preparations by local people had gone into the planned visit, seen as a major honour for one of the UK's largest Hindu communities. But it was scrapped amid concerns about how the temple is run.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that the Duke of Edinburgh will no longer be visiting the Shree Temple during the royal visit to Leicester on Thursday as there is an ongoing investigation by the Charity Commission into the business operations of the temple."

A Charity Commission spokeswoman said concerns had been brought to its attention about "the administration and management" of the Shree Hindu Temple and Community Centre, in St Barnabas Road.
