On August 14, 2003 the Detroit Free Press reported that "more than 100 women settled into informal rows in the Rochester Hills mosque [in Michigan]... Men at this mosque get to watch the imam lead prayers live; there isn't enough room for the women to join them... So the women pray from the old dining room -- accommodations mosque leaders hope to change with a proposed $1-million-plus project to build a mezzanine above the men's prayer area. There, women can pray with their eyes on the imam, not the television... Mosque leaders will start a campaign to raise money for the mezzanine this fall during the holy month of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast during the day and are urged to give money to the religious community. A construction start date has not been set."
