On April 1, 2002, The New York Post reported "Fire-gutted Sikh Temple is Strapped." The article noted that "It will take at least two years of construction and up to $10 million before the flock of the Queens Sikh Cultural Society - which numbers in the thousands - can return to the fire-gutted temple. But the leadership of the cultural society in Richmond Hill is determined to rebuild, and remains philosophical about the task ahead. 'It's part of the Sikh religion; You have to move on ... change is always there,' said Joginder Singh Malhi, who ran educational programs at the temple, or gurdwara, as it is called by Sikhs. The gurdwara was destroyed March 8 in the early-morning fire, and authorities are still investigating the cause. One man died of smoke inhalation."
