On May 27, 2004 The Boston Herald reported, "The head of the Republican National Committee huddled with about 100 local Catholic activists yesterday to build support for President George W. Bush's re-election campaign and for other Republican candidates. RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie said after the closed-door meeting at the Omni Parker House in Boston that Catholics should be more comfortable with Republican policies than with Democrat policies - even though Kerry is Catholic and Bush is a Methodist. Voters should look beyond candidates' religious views, he said. 'We should vote based upon the political (stands) they take - and the fact is President Bush's policy positions are more in synch with where most Catholics are.'' He expects Bush's opposition to legalized abortion and gay marriage will appeal to many Catholic voters."
