On September 12, 2004 San Francisco Chronicle reported, "President Bush's evangelical views and the Catholic faith of the man who would replace him have been misrepresented by the opposition and misunderstood by pundits on both sides of the political fence. That was the consensus over the weekend as spiritual confidants of the president and supporters of his Democratic rival made their case to a convention of reporters who cover religion news for the secular press. Among those speaking to the Religion Newswriters Association was the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, a Houston pastor said to be one of Bush's closest spiritual advisers."
