Belleville's religious diversity was centre stage late last month as more than 80 people gathered to celebrate World Religions Day.

Celebrated on the third Sunday of each January, World Religions Day dates back to the 1950s when the Baha'i began its celebrations. The day has expanded into other faiths over the years and, for the first time, a celebration was organized locally for 2010.

People gathered at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue to listen as sacred readings from Native Canadian spirituality, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Baha'i were shared. The celebration included music, visual presentations and displays focussing on the human spiritual quest.
