On April 22, 2005 the Stillwater NewsPress reported, "the Progressive Interfaith Coalition is a non-partisan group that was created in Stillwater after the 2004 presidential election. Co-founder Alex Thornburg said the group is a result of a simple perception that family and moral values belonged to a certain segment of the political population: the conservative right and the Republican party. Additionally, the group is concerned about the use of religion and values as a political tool by certain groups, he said. Members of the group are people of faith and values, he and co-founder Teresa Bear said. There are about 130 members in the newly formed coalition from varying religious backgrounds. Thornburg is a minister at the Presbyterian church."
